Outside of the Disney Bubble

What You Need to Know About No Frills Airlines

When planning a trip to Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort, you will need to find a way to get there. Many people will fly. When searching for flights, you might see some fares that are quite a bit lower than the others. There is nothing wrong with saving money, but check to see what you are getting before you book.

There are some airlines that are often called “no frills” airlines. There is a reason for that, you will receive nothing extra with the initial price.

When you book seats on any airline, you should see right away what is included in the quoted price. If you book through a third-party site this might not be obvious, so it is a good idea to book directly through the airline.

If the airline is no frills, you will have to pay extra to pick your seat. It will also cost more for a carryon bag and a checked bag. A personal item that will fit under the seat in front of you is allowed for no extra cost.

It is a good idea to add any desired extras when booking your flight. They will cost more if you add them later. There will most likely be an option to bundle the extras together for a savings.

What happens if you don’t pick a seat? You will be assigned one when you check in. If you aren’t traveling alone, your party could be broken up, there is no guarantee that you will have seats together.

Since a backpack will usually fit under the seat, you can use that as your personal item. It will still need to be under a certain dimension, and you will not be allowed to have a second personal item such as a purse or laptop case.

If you haven’t bought any extras you will usually be in the last boarding group. There are no free snacks or free beverages (besides water) on no frills airlines.

Like most airlines, the no frills airlines will most likely have a points or rewards program. The more you fly with that airline, the more points you will receive. You can turn them in for free flights, but check the terms and conditions. The airline might also have a credit card that you can use for points.

Some people love no frills airlines because they are a cheap way to travel. Others avoid them, because after adding the extras the cost is close to the other airlines. The choice is yours, just know what you are getting when you book.

I grew up in Western Massachusetts. When I was nine my family went to Disneyland and I was hooked. I grew up, attended New England College in Henniker, NH, and eventually moved to Virginia. I worked as a disc jockey, married, and became a full time mom when our daughter was born. Fast forward several years. In 2010, we moved to Central Florida and my Disney obsession grew. I now work as a freelance writer and spend my spare time in the Parks. Under the name Paula Brown, I penned the novels 'Dream Wanderers' and 'The Coffee Cruiser'. I also am a co-author of 'Dining at Walt Disney World: The Definitive Guide'. I'm obsessed with Star Wars, so this is a good time to live in Central Florida.
