After years of questions about whether another movie would ever actually happen, the studio finally started moving forward with Gremlins 3. However, the wait just became considerably longer.

Warner Bros. has pushed the long-awaited sequel into 2028, meaning audiences will have to wait nearly another full year before returning to the strange, chaotic world that began more than four decades ago.

Gizmo Returns With Some Unfortunate News

Warner Bros. gave fans their first small taste of Gremlins 3 with a brief teaser posted online.

The video doesn’t give away much about the upcoming story, but it does feature the character longtime fans wanted to see. Gizmo can be spotted peeking out of a backpack, immediately bringing back memories of the lovable Mogwai at the center of the original movies.

The bigger reveal comes at the end.

Warner Bros. confirmed the movie will arrive in theaters on October 6, 2028. The studio reinforced the theatrical release with the simple caption, “10.6.28. Only In Theaters.”

It’s an exciting confirmation that Gizmo will return, but the date attached to that first look may leave longtime fans with mixed feelings.

The Wait Just Got Nearly a Year Longer

The October 2028 date represents a substantial delay from Warner Bros.’ previous plans.

When Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the new movie in November 2025, the company scheduled Gremlins 3 for November 19, 2027. That would have positioned the sequel for release shortly before Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Now, fans can erase that date from their calendars.

The new October 6, 2028, release pushes the movie back by almost 11 months. While Warner Bros. has now given audiences their first teaser, the studio hasn’t publicly revealed a specific reason for moving the film.

For a franchise that has already spent decades away from theaters, another year is significant. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) arrived 38 years before the new movie’s scheduled release date.

Still, the creative team attached to the project gives fans plenty of reason to keep watching.

Some Familiar Names Are Coming Back

One of the biggest connections to the original Gremlins (1984) comes from Chris Columbus.

Columbus wrote the screenplay for the original movie, which Joe Dante directed. This time, Columbus will take a much larger role by directing and producing Gremlins 3.

Steven Spielberg is also returning as an executive producer after serving in that role on the earlier movies.

The screenplay has evolved since the project was first announced. Hannah Marks is writing the current draft from an earlier screenplay by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam B. Stein.

It’s still not certain who audiences will actually see alongside Gizmo.

Warner Bros. has not announced the returning human cast from the original movies. However, Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), quickly caught fans’ attention after the teaser appeared.

Galligan reacted to Warner Bros.’ teaser on social media with a looking-eyes emoji. That certainly isn’t confirmation that Billy will return, but it was enough to get longtime fans talking about the possibility.

Why Gizmo Still Means So Much to Fans

Part of the excitement surrounding Gremlins 3 comes from just how unusual the original movie remains.

Gremlins (1984) follows Billy Peltzer after his father gives him a mysterious creature called a Mogwai for Christmas. The adorable Gizmo comes with three important rules: keep him away from bright light, don’t get him wet, and never feed him after midnight.

Naturally, things go very wrong.

After Gizmo gets wet, he produces more Mogwai. Those creatures eventually transform into destructive Gremlins, turning the small town of Kingston Falls into complete chaos.

The movie mixed comedy, horror, Christmas imagery, creature effects, and surprisingly dark moments in a way that helped it stand apart. Gizmo also became the heart of the franchise, while the mischievous Gremlins gave the movies their unpredictable personality.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) took that idea even further, leaning heavily into comedy and giving audiences an even stranger collection of creatures.

That history helps explain why another sequel carries so much nostalgic weight. Fans aren’t simply getting another familiar title. They’re getting the first theatrical Gremlins movie in nearly four decades.
