New ‘James Bond’ Era Will Feature Three Actors as 007, More Could Follow

Few film franchises have reinvented themselves as consistently as James Bond. Since Sean Connery first appeared as 007 in Dr. No (1962), the secret agent has been portrayed by a succession of actors, each bringing a different interpretation to the role.

Daniel Craig’s five-film run concluded with No Time to Die (2021), leaving Amazon MGM Studios with the task of choosing the next face of the franchise.

That search is now unfolding alongside preparations for the next movie. Denis Villeneuve, known for directing the Dune films, is attached to helm the untitled production, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) writing the script. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are overseeing the project, which has yet to reveal its leading man, despite countless rumors.

Pascal has indicated that fans may not have to wait until next year to learn who will play Bond, suggesting an announcement before the end of 2026 is a possibility.

Until then, names including Jack Lowden, Jack Barton, and Jack O’Connell continue to circulate in speculation surrounding the coveted role.

But the cinematic casting is only one part of the franchise’s evolving identity. Bond has already acquired new performers in other formats, including Patrick Gibson, who plays the spy in IO Interactive’s 007 First Light, which was released this year, and Isaac Rouse, who voices a teenage James Bond in Big Finish Productions’ upcoming Young Bond: SilverFin audio drama.

Their roles mean that different generations of Bond are being explored simultaneously, from a younger agent at the start of his journey to the more familiar incarnation associated with the films.

More interpretations could follow. A rumored James Bond live show at Universal’s proposed UK resort might require a performer of its own, while rumors suggest the next movie could depict Bond at multiple points in his life. Neither possibility has been officially confirmed.

For now, the next big-screen casting remains the major unanswered question. Whoever gets the role will inherit one of cinema’s most enduring characters at the beginning of a new era for 007.
