Disney World Confirms Major Resort Transformation, Effective Through September 2027
Disney Meetings and Events and Walt Disney Imagineering have released concept art for the ongoing refurbishment of the Convention Center and El Centro spaces at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.
Timeline. The project began August 10, 2026, and runs through late September 2027.
Scope. The Convention Center and the El Centro Corridor.
Design direction. Disney says the reimagined areas draw inspiration from “the vibrant cultures and natural landscapes of Spain, Mexico, and the American Southwest,” with modernized finishes. Along with updated furnishings and a refreshed color palette.
Operations. Disney has confirmed the Convention Center remains fully open and operational for the duration. Work is phased around event schedules, with heavy construction taking place primarily overnight.
The Operational Confirmation Is the News
That last point resolves the open question from July. when the project was announced without a published phase schedule and with the expectation that individual meeting rooms and ballroom sections would close in sequence.
A commitment to full operation through the entire thirteen-month window is a different planning situation. This clears the uncertainty that has sat over 2027 bookings since summer.
The Theming Is Being Restored, Not Replaced
Spain, Mexico and the American Southwest are the influences Coronado Springs opened with in 1997. The casitas, ranchos and cabanas all draw from them.
So this is a re-execution of the original theme using current materials rather than a new design identity.
That is worth noting because the alternative was plausible. Gran Destino Tower brought a more contemporary aesthetic to the resort when it opened in 2019, and a convention center refresh could easily have followed into the neutral palette typical of the category. Disney’s stated intent to honor the resort’s “classic cultural roots” indicates otherwise.
Why the Investment Makes Sense
Convention business typically books 18 to 36 months ahead, so a facility’s appearance in 2026 affects bookings for 2028 and 2029.
Coronado Springs competes for that business against the Orange County Convention Center, Gaylord Palms, the Hyatt Regency Orlando and Rosen Shingle Creek in one of the country’s most active convention markets, where competitors renovate on regular cycles.
The resort’s roughly 220,000 square feet of meeting space, 45 breakout rooms, ten loading docks, on-site marshalling yard, five permanent registration counters and full-service business center only convert to bookings if the spaces present well to planners.
Mid-Project Renderings Serve a Purpose
Concept art usually appears at announcement or at completion. This release came roughly two months into the work, distributed through Disney Meetings and Events.
Planners evaluating venues for 2028 need something concrete to evaluate, and renderings provide that. The timing suggests Disney intends to sell against this project rather than work around it.
Standard caution applies: concept art indicates direction on finishes and palette without committing to specific execution.
For Guests Staying at the Resort
Coronado Springs operates normally as a hotel. Gran Destino Tower rooms and suites, four pools, six lounges, four full-service restaurants, three private dining rooms, quick service dining, fitness centers, spa and salon services, and bus transportation to Disney Springs and all four parks are unaffected.
The lakeside setting, private patios, and lakeside beach remain available for outdoor events.
El Centro houses check-in and several dining locations, and its corridor is a primary path through the resort, so guests will pass through an active work area even with nothing closed.
The overnight schedule works in guests’ favor here. Rooms are located in the casitas, ranchos, cabanas, and the tower rather than El Centro, so overnight heavy work protects both the daytime event calendar and overnight quiet in guest areas.
Where Things Stand
The project is approximately two months in with roughly eleven months remaining.
Planners weighing Coronado Springs for 2027 now have two pieces of information unavailable in July: confirmation of continuous operation, and visual direction for the finished spaces.
