Robert Downey Jr. Officially Back as Iron Man, Disney Confirms at D23

Disney’s D23 event just delivered a Marvel announcement that longtime fans have been waiting years to hear.
Robert Downey Jr. is officially reprising his role as Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man.
That carries plenty of weight considering where Marvel left the character. His return as Doctor Doom already created one of Marvel’s biggest surprises in years, but Disney has now confirmed that it isn’t the only Marvel role Downey is stepping back into.
Iron Man is back, too.
And Disney isn’t treating his return like a small cameo.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Story Had a Definitive Ending
It is difficult to separate the modern MCU from Robert Downey Jr.
Downey helped launch the franchise when he first played Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008). From there, the character became one of the central figures connecting Marvel’s growing collection of heroes and stories.
Tony went from an arrogant billionaire building weapons to one of the Avengers’ most important leaders. His relationship with Steve Rogers drove major MCU conflicts, while his connection to Peter Parker added another emotional layer to the character.
Then came Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Tony sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos and his army, using the Infinity Stones despite knowing the power would kill him. The moment closed the book on Downey’s original MCU run and gave Iron Man a definitive ending.
For years, that made a return complicated. Marvel could use the Multiverse to introduce another Tony Stark, but bringing Downey back risked weakening the impact of that farewell.
Then Marvel found another way.

Doctor Doom Was Only the Beginning of Downey’s Marvel Comeback
Marvel stunned fans when it revealed Downey would return to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark.
Instead, he will play Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
The casting immediately made Downey a major part of Marvel’s future again. It also created questions about how the MCU will handle an actor so closely associated with Iron Man playing one of Marvel’s most famous villains.
But D23 added another twist.
Downey isn’t simply returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom. Disney has officially brought him back as Tony Stark and Iron Man as well.
And guests will eventually experience that comeback themselves.

Disney Confirms Robert Downey Jr. Will Play Iron Man Again
Disney revealed the full cast for Avengers Infinity Defense and shared more details about Stark Flight Lab. Both attractions will open at Disney California Adventure in 2028.
Avengers Infinity Defense will send guests across the Multiverse as recruits joining Marvel heroes against King Thanos, a version of the villain who actually won.
The attraction will use the same type of 3D ride system found on Peter Pan’s Never Land Adventure at Tokyo DisneySea. Disney plans to combine large physical sets with screen-based environments as riders jump between locations.
Iman Vellani will appear as Ms. Marvel during the pre-show.

Jeremy Renner will return as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie will appear as Captain America, and Chris Hemsworth will reprise Thor. Most notably, Robert Downey Jr. will once again play Iron Man, reuniting him with several familiar faces from his Marvel past.
That makes the headline official: Downey is back as Iron Man. His Tony Stark comeback also extends beyond Avengers Infinity Defense.
Stark Flight Lab will put guests aboard “gyro-kinetic pods” that travel along a track before robotic arms lift and maneuver them. Those arms will have individual personalities inspired by Tony’s robotic assistant, DUM-E.
Downey will reprise Tony Stark for Stark Flight Lab, with Mackie returning as Captain America and Brie Larson appearing as Captain Marvel.
So while Downey’s theatrical Marvel future currently revolves around Doctor Doom, Disney is simultaneously bringing his version of Iron Man back at Disneyland Resort.

Could Iron Man Eventually Return to the MCU?
Naturally, Downey playing Tony Stark again raises a much bigger question. Could he eventually return as Iron Man in an MCU movie?
Disney hasn’t announced that, and his appearances in the new Disney California Adventure attractions shouldn’t be treated as confirmation that Tony Stark will return to the big screen.
Still, the possibility feels more interesting now.
Downey has already agreed to rejoin Marvel through his Doctor Doom role in Avengers: Doomsday (2026). Now, we know he is also willing to step back into Tony Stark’s world for Disney’s upcoming attractions.
With the MCU deep into its Multiverse storytelling, Marvel has ways to introduce another version of Iron Man if it chooses. Whether that actually happens could become clearer as Marvel’s next Avengers story unfolds. For now, fans don’t need to speculate about whether Downey will ever play Tony Stark again.
Disney just answered that question.
Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning as Iron Man, and beginning in 2028, Tony Stark will have a new home at Disney California Adventure.
